Examples

  1. I am studying English now.
  2. We are staying in a hotel.
  3. Don’t talk too loud. I am talking on the phone. 
  4. My English is improving these days.
  5. She is not staying with us now.
  6. What are you doing right now?

Forms

Positive:     Subject + am/is/are + v-ing+ ….

Negative:     Subject + am/is/are + not + v-ing+ ….

Questions:     (Wh-) + am/is/are + subject + v-ing+ ….?

Note:     is not ==> isn’t are not ==> aren’t am not ==> amn’t 



ING Spelling

  • -e : omit e and add ing. (exception with ee and ie)

Take ==> taking; make ==>  making; … (see ==>  seeing; lie ==>  lying; die ==>  dying; …)

  • CVC: add final C and add ing: (exception with w, x, and y)

                    sit ==>  sitting;                     cut ==>  cutting;                 stop ==>  stopping; 

                    run ==>  running;                 jog ==>  jogging;                 swim ==>  swimming; …

                    

                    begin ==>  beginning;         prefer ==>  preferring;         admit ==>  admitting; …

                    answer ==>  answering;     listen ==>  listening;             offer ==>  offering; …

  • Other verbs take ing:

                    study ==>  studying;         walk ==>  walking;             sew ==>  sewing; 

                    box ==>  boxing;                 speak ==>  speaking


Uses

To describe something that is happening now:

        Be quiet. I am studying.

To describe a temporary states and actions:

        I am staying in the province this week. 

To describe states that are changing or developing:

        Prices are rising very fast these days. 

To describe something that we plan to do in the immediate future. 

        My mom is seeing the doctor tomorrow at 2:30 P.M.

To describe actions that are repeated and are annoying. (with always, constantly, …)

        A few students are always making noises during my class.
