English Tenses: Past Simple

Examples

Thida called her parents yesterday.

We didn’t have class on Saturday last week.

This morning I needed to wait for ten minutes for the doctor. 

My family visited Angkor Wat three years ago. 

We went their on Friday. We came back on Sunday. 

Forms

Positive: Subject + verb past simple + ….

Negative: Subject + did + not + verb base + ….

Questions: (Wh-) Did + subject + verb base + …?

Yes, subject + did.

No, subject + didn’t. 

Note: did not => didn’t


Verbs: Past Simple

Regular: + ED

Walk => walked

Phone => phoned

study => studied

Play => played

translate => translated

Irregular: NOT ED

Go  => went

Pay  => paid

come => came

Cut  => cut 

Read => read


ED Spelling


*     -e : add D: live => lived like => liked

*     CVC: add final C +ED: stop => stopped plan => planned

refer => referred admit => admitted

offer => offered happen => happened

*     Verbs that end in a consonant and Y, Y is changed to I and ED follows. 

Study => studied

*     The rest of verbs take ED: walk => walked phone => phoned


ED Pronunciation

ED = /id/

                        1. -t: wanted, visited 2. –d: reminded, responded, commanded 

ED = /t/

                        1. -p: helped;             2. –k: walked;                     3. /f/: sniffed, laughed; 

                        4. –sh: washed;         5 –ch: watched                    6. /s/: kissed, danced, fixed,

ED = /d/ 

                        None the above


Uses

Actions happened and ended at specific time or duration in the past

  1. I went to the market yesterday.
  2. My family lived in Takmau for two years from 2004 to 2005. 

Past habits

  1. I liked to play kites when I was young.
  2. Sothea liked to play toys ten years ago, but now he likes to play with his computer. 

Past actions that happened after one another.

  1. Yesterday I went to school. I worked, had lunch, and drank some coffee.
