Uses

Past Simple (time)

Actions happened and ended at specific time or duration in the past and time is mentioned. 

I went to the market yesterday.

I had a cup of coffee this noon.

My family lived in Takmau for two years from 2004 to 2005. 

Present Perfect Simple (action)

Actions happened and ended in the past, but time is mentioned. The actions happened and have not ended yet until now. The duration has not ended yet. 

Sokha has gone to the market already. 

Mr. Muny has taught English for 17 years. 

I have had two cups of coffee already today.
